Intended Learning Outcomes: Where to find them?
You may have given a list of subjects, skills, or maybe you’ve talked about the textbook or how they will speak better English. These are all good and true but as teachers, we need to be clear and focused on what students will learn.
How do we know what our students are supposed to learn at the end of a specific chapter or the syllabus for a year? We know that through Learning Outcomes.
Learning Outcomes tell us what students are expected to be able to do, say, write, or show at the end of a particular class or year for different subjects. In India, NCERT has a detailed list of Learning Outcomes. Similarly, different state boards and many international boards have also defined a list of Learning Outcomes for each chapter.
Let us look at this example:

Let us look at this image here, this is a screenshot of the learning outcomes defined by NCERT for Grade 4 English.
When planning for a grade 4 classroom, the teacher should ensure that she is progressing towards achieving the learning outcomes. She should focus on the specified skills and concepts. Outcomes arecarefully designed keeping in mind what learners should already know and their developmental readiness to do the same.
You may explore the learning outcomes laid out by NCERT for Grade 1 to 8 here and Grade 9-10 here and for Grade 11-12 here.
