Knowing the Anatomy of an MCQ

Before we begin, it is important to understand the anatomy of an MCQ and the common terminologies around it.

An MCQ comprises of the following:

  • A stem which can be in the form of a question or a statement. It can also be a figure or a diagram depending on the context.
  • List of possible solutions or the alternatives which includes the correct answer or the key and the incorrect answers or the distractors. The alternatives can also be in the form of statement, terms, figures, or a diagram.
