Fixing “performance” using Bloom’s Taxonomy
In this topic, let us explore the “performance” component in more detail. Now, look at the learning objective below and identify if it is an effective learning objective or not.
“Students will understand with 100% accuracy the process of transpiration using a labelled diagram”
The learning objective in the above activity is ineffective because the “performance” component, which specifies what students will be able to do, is not observable or measurable.
Students will know the process of transpiration.
Students will be able to define the process of transpiration.
Thus, we need to use action verbs in the “performance” of our learning objectives to create effective measurable learning objectives.
Bloom’s Taxonomy provides us with action words that can be used to fix a measurable “performance” component in a learning objective.
You can find several action words that can be used to fix the “performance” of a learning objective in the below infographic. Incorporating these words in the learning objective specifies which level you want to teach at and makes it easier to plan the lesson based on the skill level (this list is not exhaustive!).

1. Take the learning objectives from the lesson plan submitted earlier.
2. Modify the learning objectives based on what you have learnt in the past 3 topics using Bloom’s Taxonomy.
3. Upload the lesson plan with the updated learning objectives in the “Assignments” section below.
