Deep Dive into the Elements of Interactivity
Now that you have understood what the different elements of interactivity are, let’s zoom in on a few elements that are most relevant to online class.
Let us look at ways to improve Learner-Learner and Teacher-Learner interactions in an online setting.
Learner-Learner Interaction
Social interaction is a very important element of learning, not only because students can learn from one another, but also because it can motivate them to do better. Research has shown that classes with high levels of interaction between students have higher levels of satisfaction and learning. Online schooling has made it very difficult for learner-learner interaction to take place in the virtual classroom.
Strategy
Conduct online activities that encourage students to:
- Build a rapport with each other: an online discussion forum where students can introduce themselves to their peers and establish connections. As the instructor, you can also introduce yourself to model this behaviour for students.
- Reflect and discuss: assignments like team debates which require students to prepare together, and support or rebut their classmates’ arguments.
- Student interaction in real time, or different times: create a shared workspace where the small sections of the class or the whole class collaborates on a project.
Teacher-Learner Interaction
In online classrooms, the role of the teacher changes from being the source of information during classes, to be a guide and mentor throughout the process of learning.
Strategy
- Provide your phone number or email ID as points of contact for students
- Track your students’ performance and motivation
- Provide prompt feedback, within 24 hours if possible
- Provide detailed information to learners every step of the way
