5.5 Providing Feedback on Assessments

Let’s discuss what effective feedback is all about!

What are the characteristics of effective feedback?

  • It must be specific: Feedback should pinpoint what students are doing well/correctly AND what they are doing that is not up to expectations/wrong.
  • It must be actionable: Feedback should tell students what they should do next/what to improve/ whether to make revisions AND tell them how to do it. Feedback should encourage students to keep doing what they are doing well
  • It must be timely: Feedback should be given at the right time so that changes can be implemented

Why is it important to provide effective feedback to students?

  • To tell students how their assessment was graded
  • To identify what students did well and tell them
  • To guide students on what steps to take to improve
  • To motivate them to learn from their assessment
  • To develop their skills to learn on their own
