Let’s discuss what effective feedback is all about!
What are the characteristics of effective feedback?
- It must be specific: Feedback should pinpoint what students are doing well/correctly AND what they are doing that is not up to expectations/wrong.
- It must be actionable: Feedback should tell students what they should do next/what to improve/ whether to make revisions AND tell them how to do it. Feedback should encourage students to keep doing what they are doing well
- It must be timely: Feedback should be given at the right time so that changes can be implemented
Why is it important to provide effective feedback to students?
- To tell students how their assessment was graded
- To identify what students did well and tell them
- To guide students on what steps to take to improve
- To motivate them to learn from their assessment
- To develop their skills to learn on their own
