What do learners already know?

How can I reach the right sequence?

Most sequencing activities undertaken by instructors or content developers are based on the understanding of the concept and research. Ask yourself the following 3 questions:

  1. Where should I begin my instruction?
  2. What should my audience already know in order for me to introduce this topic/concept?
  3. How is the content linked to previously learnt and upcoming concepts?

Keeping these questions in mind, we reach the correct sequence of the content we want to present.

Why is research important?

Research helps in understanding the sequence and linkages of concepts.

Research helps the instructor and content developer to be updated about new information and therefore, modifying our content design.

Research helps transform our outline into actual content elements.

Research helps in addressing misconceptions and provides a chance to include new and credible ideas in your content artifact.

How to do targeted reasearch?

Summarising the above video, let us note down 6 key aspects to keep in mind while researching:

  1. Develop a list of key concepts that you want to research about.
  2. Move in a sequencial order based on your outline.
  3. Startegize your search by being very specific- ask very specific questions. What you out into the search engine is what you get out of it.
  4. Start with Wikipedia to get a general understanding then move onto other credible sources. (Wikipedia is a good place to start but not to end!)
  5. Make detailed notes on what you have read/are reading. Highlight key information and new ideas that you want to include.
  6. Add citations and references wherever necessary.
