A. Setting Norms

Some points to keep in mind with respect to setting norms in online classes:

  • Students will more likely follow norms that they have helped create than those dictated to them. Therefore, it may be a good strategy to begin with a list of a few essential norms and then brainstorm some more with the class before enforcing them. You can also ask for their input on setting consequences for breaking norms.
  • It’s important to make sure there aren’t too many norms, because these can become difficult to remember.
  • Once the list of norms is ready, put it up in a place that is accessible to students as well as parents.
  • Revisit the norms from time to time, for example by putting them in the rubric for assignments etc.
